This is a plan for a Christmas assembly on the Annunciation (when Mary was visited by the Angel Gabriel), with a focus on promises and trust. There is an attached PowerPoint with the assembly starter and the story of the Annunciation. The plan is easy to follow and requires no resources, so is perfect for using at the last minute! I like leading assemblies that are interactive, engaging and relevant to the children’s lives. So this assembly involves the children discussing promises made by various people in their lives before listening to the story and again discussing. There is a lot of opportunity for children to think about their own experiences and to feedback. There is also an example prayer/reflection to finish with. The Advent Calendar covers a wide range of questions that are included in the Year 2 SPaG SATs paper and uses Christmas themed scenarios that the children can relate to. A great start to the Christmas season!

So this assembly involves using an anecdote about a December when you prepared for Christmas in all the wrong ways. You can use the example in the plan or use an anecdote from your own childhood. The children are then encouraged to think about how they can prepare for Christmas by thinking about others. It is adapted from the Bible and tells part of the Christmas story, when the Wise Men travel to Bethlehem to visit Jesus. There are three differentiated booklets. The higher booklet has two pages of text for the children to read before they complete a range of questions based on a mixture of the KS1 and KS2 SATs. There is a reading booklet of 3 pages (around 1000 words), followed by 4 pages of questions, which are based on last year’s paper. There is also a mark scheme. I have included 3 differentiated levels. The Higher Ability level is similar to the SATs paper, whilst the Middle Ability and Lower Ability use slightly simplified wording in the reading and question booklet and could also be used by year 5s. A 21 page presentation describing the traditions of Christmas in Germany. It covers Christmas markets, decorations, food and Christmas trees. Each slide has a short piece of text accompanied by a picture. It could be used as part of a lesson or for an assembly for children aged 4 -11.
